Set in feudal Japan at the turn of the 17th century, the series follows English sailor John Blackthorn (Cosmo Jarvis) as he becomes entangled in the power struggle between the ambitious Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and his enemies among the Council of Regents. Where previous adaptations centered the Western outsider's perspective, this Shōgun wisely reframes the story: Toranaga is the protagonist, and Blackthorn — while compelling — is ultimately a piece on a larger board.
Hiroyuki Sanada, who also produces, delivers a performance of extraordinary subtlety and power. Toranaga is inscrutable but never opaque — we gradually come to understand his methods without ever fully predicting them. It's one of the great performances in recent television history.
Anna Sawai and the Art of Translation
Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko is the series' secret weapon — a character of enormous interior complexity who serves as the literal and figurative translator between the show's two worlds.
